A very happy birthday in Madrid

Published on February 16, 2017 by Madrid SmartRentals

One of the biggest city emblems, Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, celebrates its birthday in 2017. We’re talking about the fourth centenary of the construction works of one of the most emblematic corners of the Spanish capital.

A site of reference and a meeting point, Madrid’s Plaza Mayor has changed over the years, decades and centuries.

An emblematic place

As we were telling you, Madrid’s Plaza Mayor is a site of reference and a meeting point in the city. Designed by the architects Juan de Herrera and Juan Gómez de Mora, the first construction works started in 1617. Amongst the most characteristic buildings you can find the Casa de la Panadería (i.e. Bakery’s house) and the Casa de la Carnicería (i.e. butcher’s house) two of the oldest in town. The Casa de la Panadería is located in the north lateral. It has suffered several remodelling’s, but this building still is as pretty as it was at the end of the 16th Century.

The Butcher’s House is right in the centre of the south wing. This four-level building was built in 1631, just after the first fire that devastated the plaza.

Plaza Mayor’s Centenary

Precisely for the fourth Centenary of the works that started this amazing plaza, a series of events have been programmed in the city.

Said celebrations start tomorrow, the 17th of February, with the recording of a 360-degree immersive video-mapping, that will give the spectator the possibility of submerging in a true sensorial experience. It’s the first projection of this sort that takes place in Spain.

By means of this projection, locals and visitors will be able to discover all the history behind Plaza Mayor since the project was first laid out, going through the various fires that damaged it, and the events that have taken place until today.

You can enjoy it on the 17th, 18th and 19th of February at 8:30PM.
