Off Madrid

Madrid is probably the Spanish theatre capital. Musicals, big productions, important premieres… in one way or the other, everyone who has something to say in the art world (companies, directors, actors, producers, stage designers…) end up in the Spanish capital. However, nearly at the same time as this more mainstream option, more alternative choices have been appearing in Madrid’s theatrical scene, in an off-Broadway manner. Today we would like to tell you about this independent theatre in Madrid.

Off Madrid

This network of alternative theatres has been growing in the past few years, in a kind of off-Madrid. Far away from being a minority concept, we’re talking about fifty alternative stages in a smaller format where you can enjoy in your weekend, several theatrical representations in Madrid.  Nevertheless in the 70’s and 80’s various spaces of alternative theatre also appeared, even if it’s from 2009 when the real boom takes place.

Lavapiés, Embajadores, Malasaña, Cuatro Caminos, La Latina or Chueca are just some of the neighbourhoods and areas in Madrid where this scene has most flourished. Lavapiés-La Latina is probably the neighbourhood that concentrates the majority of the alternative theatre offer in Madrid.

Stages like the Mirador (Doctor Fourquet, 31), La Escalera de Jacob (Lavapiés, 19) or El Umbral de Primavera have different bold and daring representations in the area.

In Malasaña you can find perfect examples of Microtheatre, just as the Espacio Labruc, in the 18th of Calle Palma, or Nuev9 Norte (Calle Norte, 9). Embajadores also has a wide variety of options in the alternative theatre scen: Teatro Lagrada (Ercilla, 20), Teatro la Usina (One of the classics in Palos de la Frotnera, 4) or Cuarta Pared (Ercilla, 17).
