August in Madrid: how to make the most of the city

Published on June 10, 2019 by Madrid SmartRentals

August is par excellence the time to go on Holidays. In this month, thousands decide to go out to enjoy a few relaxing days and use the opportunity to travel, discover new cities, and disconnect from the daily routine.

On the other hand, others decide to go to work, either because of the peace and quiet you can breathe in the streets, or because of the new employment opportunities that arise.

Whether you’re enjoying your holidays in August, or if you’ve decided to work, August is an ideal time to plan a nice getaway to Madrid and discover the city without any pressure.

Getaway in August’s bank holiday.

August is a great time to plan a small holiday in Madrid. However you are, Madrid has a plan for you, and if you visit us in August, you’ll be able to enjoy the city at your pace, making the most out of each moment and discovering everything that Madrid has to offer!

In this post, we’re going to try to go over some of the best plans to do in August, perfect for all tastes: couples, kids, cultural visits, and every other thing we can recommend for you to have the best possible getaway.

Fiesta de la Paloma

We had to start by recommending this very unique local holiday in the city. La verbena de la Paloma is one of our most important festivities. The surroundings of Calle de La Paloma are decorated with lights and garlands, the balconies get dressed up for the occasion and in the streets you can enjoy traditional dances, local food tasting and Manila shawl competitions. Additionally, it’s a great opportunity to see locals dressed up with the characteristic chulapo costume.

Madrid in August with kids

If you’re coming with your children, Madrid has a wide variety of activities to share with your family, from the famous Warner Park, where you can enjoy all the fun attractions, zoos like Faunia or Zoo Aquarium, where you can see the animals and interact with them.

The city also counts with a great theatre programming for adults and children with plays such as The Lion King or with activities specially thought for kids to fully unwind!

A lot of shopping centres also make the most out of the summer to adapt their facilities for children, with bouncy castles and activities for children, a great place for kids to have fun while adults rest in one of the many restaurant terraces you can find.
And what better way to cool down after a warm summer day than to visit the Palacio de Hielo ice rink, and skate with your family.
If skating is not your thing, you can take a break and relax in the pool in our apartments, and recover your strengths to keep enjoying the city in the night.

Romantic getaway

If your plan is to organise a romantic getaway with your loved one in August’s bank holiday, in addition to enjoying the La Paloma festivities, we recommend you not to miss out on Madrid’s terraces.

Located on the Street or on top of some of the most emblematic buildings, these terraces have become a usual meeting place in Madrid’s evening and nights.

You can find them anywhere, from the patios of some markets, such as San Antón, to the rooftops of museums, like the mirador del Thyssen.
And of course, if you’re staying with us, you can enjoy our rooftop terrace in the 13th level, with solarium and a pool with jets where you can see the most important buildings of the centre of Madrid while relaxing and recovering strengths to keep discovering the city. If you want to get to know more about it, we suggest you read this post about our wonderful rooftop.

Cultural visits, concerts and festivals.

If you like to visit museums and exhibits, this August bank holiday you’re in luck because you can enjoy diverse cultural activities, as this year Madrid celebrates the Prado Museum bicentennial, Madrid’s Metro centenary, and Lorca’s Year. For example, you’ll be able to visit exhibits such as Miradas afines, dedicated to Dutch paintings, or enjoy live concerts and performances in several metro stations. To know more about the programmes, visit their websites: Museo del Prado and Centenario Metro Madrid.
