Visit the Neanderthal Valley in Madrid

Madrid doesn’t only have an impressive castle, monument and historical building’s network. Mankind’s footprint in the region goes back to a time where we still lived in caves and we started to comprehend what fire meant.

Today we are going to propose a plan in Madrid, ideal for kids and families, and that is a walk through the prehistoric era.

The Neanderthal valley

On September the 15th, after the Summer season, the visits to the Nearthendal Valley start again. This archaeological park in Madrid holds the rests that were found in the Lozoya Upper Valley, in Pinilla del Valle and Calvero de la Higuera.

There are four sites, the oldest one was discovered in 1979: Cueva del Camino, Cueva la Buena Pinta, Abrigo de Navalmaillo and la Cueva Des-Cubierta. We are in front of an archaeological rest of first order in Europe, that gives us the opportunity of discovering how Neanderthal that occupied those areas used to live.

The site is studied in a permanent manner by a group of palaeontologists, archaeologists and geologists whose efforts are centred to discover and reconstruct the environment changes that occurred in that are over more than 3,000 centuries and the way that these changes affected the lifestyle, customs and food of these first settlers..

This site and the area where its located has the title of Bien de Interés Cultural. Very few sites in the old continent hold paleonthropologic remains like the ones you can find in the Neanderthal Valley in Madrid.
