Roman remains in Madrid

From the 218 before Christ, and until the entry of the Visigoths into the Iberian Peninsula (5th Century) the Roman presence in Spain left an important legacy, both in the use and customs as in the language, law, architecture or gastronomy. In Madrid you can enjoy some of the remains of the Roman Empire that are very well conserved and have a great value. Today we’ll tell you about some of them.

Complutum

The Complutum site represents the city’s origin and nowadays it’s known as Alcalá de Henares. These urban remains, from the 1st Century are located in the southern part of the city. A great part of the extension is set up as an open air museum.

Roman roads in Fuenfría and Galapagar

This form of communication was built in the 1st Century and crossed the Guadarrama Mountain Range through the Fuenfría Valley. It gives us the opportunity of seeing how the Romans transported their goods, passengers and troops, from one side to the other of the region.

The Roman road in Galapagar is located just next the the road between Collado Villalba and Galapagar, right in the Guadarrama Natural Park. It has over 200 metres long and 8 metres of width

The ‘El Beneficio’ Roman Site

Here lay the archaeological remains of the Roman mansio of Miaccum, a great example of civil architecture of the time. These type of buildings were used for the rest and accommodation of officials, politicians and travellers throughout the empire.

The mansio  is situated in the Collado Mediano town and consisted of two floors with two wings separated with a patio. In the museum they organise guided visits in a regular way.

Roman villa of Valdetorres del Jarama

Over 40km separate Madrid from this interesting site constructed in the time of Constantuis Chlorus (337 to 361). This octagonal building counts with various spaces offer us an approach to what civil architecture of the time.
