Remembering Cervantes in the Barrio de las Letras

Some weeks ago we showed you in this blog some of the best ways to follow Miguel de Cervantes’ footsteps while visiting Madrid. This year, with the purpose of the 4^th centenary of the death of this legendary novelist and dramatist, different events to remember the writer of El Quijote take place in Madrid.

The City Hall, the Distrito Centro, and the Sol and Barrio de las Letras Neighbourhood Association organise, until the 30^th of April, several acts and events in this neighbourhood where the famous author lived.

This tribute to Cervantes in the ‘Neighbourhood of words’ (Barrio de las Letras) includes open-air theatre, where some of his most celebrated characters will come back to life, games and activities for children, live concerts, marionettes…

Surrounding the theme of this homage is the 1^st edition of the Miguel de Cervantes Book Fair. In this parallel event in the Plaza de Santa Ana, various libraries and book shops exhibit their literary collections, and they prepare book presentations and talks.

April 23^rd is the ‘big’ day of this happening. This is the exact date the writer died and is the same day as the International Book Day. At 20:30 a funeral procession made up of locals, tourists and organizers will go over the distance that separates the Spanish Theatre and the Trinitarias convent where his remains lay.
