Santa María del Paular
This monastery, located in the town of Rascafría and built in 1390 was for over five centuries a Carthusian convent. The altarpiece in the church and its Baroque chapel are just some of its main attractions.
Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales
TheDescalzas Reales convent was founded in 1559 by Joanna of Austria. Inside you can find a very important collection of pieces of art. Nowadays, the monastery has turned into a museum that you can visit. It’s located in Plaza de las Descalzas in Madrid.
Royal Monastery of the Incarnation
The Royal Monastery of the Incarnation is very close to the Descalzas Reales Monastery, so you can maybe visit both on the same day. The Royal Monastery of the Incarnation is located in the number 1 of the Plaza de la Encarnación in Madrid. It was built on 1616 and nowadays it counts with an open museum managed by the National Heritage.
The Monastery holds a quite large collection of sculpture and paintings.
San Lorenzo del Escorial
The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial is a must if you’re staying in Madrid for a few days. Located in the Royal Site of El Escorial, National Heritage by Unesco, it’s an amazing arquitectonic and arqueologic ensemble.
Not for nothing, since the 16th century it’s known in the whole world as the 8th Wonder of the World, both for its dimensions and the ensemble’s symbolism.
