Following the steps of Cervantes in Madrid

Published on November 24, 2016 by Madrid SmartRentals

Madrid and Spain continue with the acts of celebration of the 400 anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the most important Spanish writer of all times. Today we give you some ideas to enjoy the life’s work of this genius writer during these December local festivities and, in addition, to program a more than recommendable historical and cultural getaway.

Cervantes en Danza

The first on the list of these great plans that evolve around the figure of Cervantes is dance-related. The National Dance Company puts El Quixote on scene, with the choreography of Jose Carlos Martínez and inspired by the versions of Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorski.

The libretto of this colourful play is based on an episode of the 21st chapter of El Quixote’s second volume. A dance performance, influenced by the Spanish essence and dancing, where the search for a platonic and perfect love is the narrative thread that interweaves the choreographies.

In the Teatro de la Zarzuela webpage you have more information regarding the characteristics and dates of this dance performance in Madrid.

A journey back in time

If you want to enjoy Cervantes in its most natural context, the theatre, a perfect plan to do in Madrid in these local festivities is to go to the Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares. The 3rd and 4th of the following month two Miguel de Cervantes interludes that have never before been represented are put into scene, by the direction of Ernesto Arias.

In addition to this, the Teatro de la Abadía will represent, with the direction of José Luis Gómez, two Cervantes’ interludes: ‘La Cueva de Salamanca’ and ‘El Viejo celoso’. Both in this representation as well as the one above visitants have the great chance of having a guided visit through the Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares, a theatre-museum that was originally built on 1601 and lets us discover how the leisure and theatre was lived on the Spanish Golden Age.
