Discovering Madrid. Colmenar de la Oreja.
A charming getaway. Colmenar de la Oreja.
Colmenar de la Oreja has a beautiful Plaza Mayor (i.e. main square), built in 1676. During the September festivities, it transforms into a portable square to celebrate several bull-fighting events. Quite a few movies and TV series have been filmed in this astonishing setting.
Moreover, if you’re planning on visiting Colmenar de Oreja, you can’t miss three of the most important religious monuments: La Ermita del Cristo (17th Century), the Convento de la Encarnación (founded in the 16th Century) and the Santa María La Mayor Church (17th Century).
We also recommend you dedicate a small part of your getaway to see Ulpiano Checa’s works, in his own museum. First opened in 1960, this museum has a wide variety of paintings of this artist. This poster artist, sculptor and illustrator incorporated to his paintings impressionist and luminous elements, giving his historical works a dynamic and epic character.
Land of wines
For the enthusiasts of a good food table, you have another excuse to visit Colmenar de la Oreja. This is a town with an important wine tradition. Colmenar Viejo’s wines are inside Madrid’s Autonomous Community Certificate of Origin.
It has 9 cellars and in 4 of them you can take part in their well known wine routes that the Autonomous Community of Madrid has. A great way to taste this juice in your visit to this beautiful town.
