Christmas markets in Madrid

Published on December 1, 2016 by Madrid SmartRentals

One of the greatest pleasures that walking through Madrid at this time of the year has, is to go over the different streets and plazas where you can find Christmas markets. This is an ideal way to spend a morning or afternoon and shop around with regards to the festivities that are already knocking on our doors. Today we’re going to tell you all about the most emblematic Christmas markets in Madrid.

Christmas markets in Madrid

A wide variety of options throughout the city. Visiting the Christmas markets in Madrid is like letting our inner child come out for a bit.

Plaza Mayor’s Christmas market

Plaza Mayor’s Christmas market is probably the most emblematic of the Spanish capital and one of the most important of the whole country. You might have seen it in one or two movies or TV shows.

The 104 stands that put together this street market have this year a beautiful red colour (in keeping with the festivities). This emblematic market can be enjoyed until the 31st of December.

Plaza de España Christmas market

You can enjoy this lovely market from the 10th of December to the 5th of January of 2017. This fair specialises in offering craftwork, ceramics, sculpture, goldsmithing, decoration… over 200 Spanish artisans work in this market

Mercadillo del Gato

One of Madrid’s Christmas classics is the Mercadillo del Gato (i.e. Cat market). In Centro Cultural de losEjércitos (Gran Vía 13) you can find this market where you can buy fashion products, hand-made articles, things for children, jewellery, art, accessories… open from 11am to 9pm from the 2nd of December to the 5th of January.

Although these are not Christmas markets per se, we highly recommend you visit El Rastro de Madrid or the San Antónand San Miguel markets. The first on the list is open on Sundays and local holidays, and you can find all kinds of antiquities, second-hand books or furniture. In the case of the San Antón and San Miguel markets, this is a visit we suggest if you’re planning on giving someone a good wine or delicatessen food for the festivities.
