The most famous graves in Madrid
There is a peculiar touristic trend, a little macabre (to put it plainly) that finds beauty and interest in visiting cemeteries. Not surprisingly, examples like the Parisian cemetery of Pére-Lachaise (visited by millions of tourists every year) clearly shows usthe increasing attraction to know the final resting places of the most prestigious and curious characters for whatever reasons.
Today we are talking about the graves of some of the most illustrious characters that you can visit whilst in Madrid, as well as the graveyards that are important for all types of different reasons.
San Sebastián’s Church
In this Church placed in 34 Atocha street rests , who is considered the most acclaimed Spanish playwright of all times, Lope de Vega (. Miguel de Cervantes permitting) the exact location of the tomb within the church is still a mystery today.
San Justo cemetery
In the historical cemetery in the San Justo neighbourhood, lie some much acclaimed “residents”. In this graveyard you can visit the graves of people like the romantic Spanish writer Mariano José de Larra, the flamenco dancer Pastora Imperio, the writer Ramón Gómez de la Serna, the actress Sara Montiel or the poet Espronceda, amongst others. .
The Almudena
The Nuestra Señora de la Almudena cemetery is, with 296 acres, not only the biggest in Madrid but one of the biggest of Europe. The list of distinguished people buried in this cemetery is quite large: Vicente Aleixandre, PíoBaroja, Alfredo Di Stefano, Benito Pérez Galdós,
Fernando Martín, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Lola Flores… on top of this, it holds a serie of commemorative monuments to the Cubaand Philippine fallen heroes, the Thirteen Roses, a young group of women that were executed by a firing squad in Franco’s regimen.
The Trinitarias
Despite not being able to confirm with 100% accuracy, that the remains of Miguel de Cervantes rest here, the convent and church of the Trinitarias in Madrid is generally considered to be the more plausible place where the remains of the genius of literature rest in peace.
