When you need to study, prepare a presentation, enjoy a great book in peace and quiet…a library is a magical place, that adapts to many purposes and needs. Today we’re going to tell you about some of the best libraries in Madrid, so you can bury yourself deep into the story of a book or just disconnect from all the noise of a busy city.

The best libraries in Madrid

There are approximately 4,200 public access libraries in Spain. Madrid is the fourth Autonomous Community in Spain by number of libraries, and the second in matter of visits per inhabitant.

These are some of the most special libraries in Madrid, or at least those that offer an added value of beauty, tranquillity or specialization that make us recommend them.

  • National Library: Several work rooms and wide opening hours in the library of libraries of Madrid. Located in the 22nd of Paseo de Recoletos, it was first opened in 1711 and has a collection of over 30 million copies.
  • Real Academia Nacional de Medicina: The library of the Royal National Medical Academy is beautiful and calm. It’s situated right in the centre of Madrid and offers a perfect place to study.
  • Biblioteca del Retiro: A modern and comfortable library, located in an ideal setting. It counts with newspaper archives, internet, common room, work rooms…
  • BibliotecaHistórica de la Universidad Complutense: In calleNoviciado 3. The Archives of the Universidad de Alcalá were transferred in 1836 to Madrid and this library was created in 2000 to conserve copies dated from before 1830. This is the second library in Spain with the highest volume of copies previous to the 19th Century.
  • Biblioteca del Casino de Madrid: One of the most beautiful ones in the city, very close to Puerta del Sol. The metal bookshelves (created to stop the fire’s propagation) are amazing, as well as the rest of the furniture.
  • Biblioteca del Museo Reina Sofía: This open access library is inside the museum. It’s perfectly quiet to study, or prepare a presentation.
