Belenes throughout the city
One of the most important Christmas traditions in Madrid is to enjoy the decoration of the festivities. In addition to the beautiful illumination, another of the ways to soak up in the Christmas spirit is to visit the different nativity scenes in the city (Belén). Today we’re going to tell you about the most important ones.
Belenes in Madrid
To decorate your house with a nativity scene (or belén in Spanish) is one of the most famous Spanish traditions for this time of the year. In the Spanish capital there are several samples of different sizes and aesthetics so you can enjoy this union of tradition, devotion and folklore.
- City Hall: As you can read in this article, up until the 8th of January, tourists and locals can enjoy this belén in CentroCentro. José Luis Mayo, in collaboration with the Belenistas de Madrid Association, has elaborated this masterpiece that occupies around 8 square metres and represents different scenes.
- National Museum of Decorative Arts: In this museum you can find one of the most interesting ones in the city. Following this link you can see different information regarding the times, guided visits and days where you can enjoy this belén.
- Sun Night in Matadero: The exhibition ‘Noche de Sol`’ (i.e. Sun Night) takes place in the Casa del Lector in Matadero Madrid. Here you can take a look at 247 international nativity scenes from over 80 countries (Peru, Russia, United States…) in an initiative that searches to show the visitors the different Christmas visions that the different cultures have- There are over 3,500 statues and figures that you can see.
