The best plans to beat the summer heat in Madrid
Although Madrid can be an extremely hot city in summer, the truth is that the capital has plenty of plans to fight the high temperatures. At SmartRental we know all the tricks to cool off in the city during the hottest months, and that’s why we suggest you a series of things to do in Madrid in the summer when the thermometer keeps rising.
What to do in Madrid in the summer?
Bathing in Madrid’s beaches and swimming pools
There is no better way to beat the heat than to take a dip in one of Madrid’s natural pools and beaches. The most central (and the first artificial beach in Spain) is Madrid Río, located in one of the city’s largest natural enclaves, next to the Manzanares River.
If you don’t mind taking the car, an hour’s drive from the centre of Madrid you will find the Embalse de San Juan reservoir. With several kilometres of beach, this place is ideal for taking refuge from the high temperatures. Another option is to enjoy one of Madrid’s municipal swimming pools, which are open to the public all summer.
Take refuge in museums and parks
An excellent idea to stop sweating and discover the rich cultural offer of the capital is to take refuge in one of Madrid’s museums. You can discover the interesting exhibitions open all year round at the Prado Museum, the Thyssen National Museum or the Reina Sofía Museum. If you buy your ticket in advance, you can avoid waiting in line at the ticket offices.
For those who prefer outdoor activities, strolling through Madrid’s parks amidst the greenery is also a good idea to cool off. Walk among the exotic plants of the Royal Botanical Gardens, or enjoy one of the concerts of the Municipal Symphonic Band scheduled throughout the summer in the music pavilion of El Retiro.
Enjoying an evening at an open-air cinema
One of the most popular activities in Madrid during the summer is the open-air cinema, a unique plan that is perfect for the hottest nights of the year. The Fescinal at Parque de la Bombilla, the CinePlaza at Matadero or the Autocine Madrid Centro are some of the options for enjoying a good film outdoors.
Cool off on a rooftop terrace
What better place to stay cool on than a terrace overlooking the city? At the Ella Sky Bar in Madrid you can enjoy a spectacular 360º view of the capital, from morning to night. With a restaurant and cocktail bar, this rooftop terrace in the heart of Madrid is perfect for a summer night.
Another option for an evening with views of the Madrid skyline is the Osadía Lounge & Sky Bar, recently opened in the SmartRental Collection Capital building on Gran Vía. Fall in love with Madrid’s sunset while you enjoy the varied selection of cocktails at Osadía, open every day of the week from 18:00h.
