5 charming parks in Madrid

Published on June 6, 2016 by Madrid SmartRentals

Madrid, even with all the traffic, skyscrapers and hassle of the big city, has a series of highly recommendable gardens and parks where you can get lost for a while and breath fresh air.

Today we take you to some of the most charming parks in Madrid, where you will be able to enjoy many things apart from just trees and local fauna.

El Capricho garden

The Historic Garden El Capricho, in Alameda de Osuna is a natural area that dates back to the Enlightenment period, with a large flora of oak trees, pines, cypresses, chestnut or cedar trees, as well as a delightful fauna of nightingales, swans, ducks or squirrels.

El Capricho, first opened in 1874 by the Osuna Dukes, has a special attraction. On Saturdays and Sundays, you can also visit a real Spanish Civil War bunker, of over 2,000 squared metres and located at approximately 15 metres below the park. Its perfect condition makes it something unique in the old continent.

Campo del Moro

The Queen María Christina ordered in the 19th Century the design and construction of these gardens, as an imitation of those that were made in the same period in England. It was declared as historic and artistic heritage in 1931 and in it you can breathe the romantic air and spirit from which it was constructed.

Huerto de las Monjas

This small and pretty garden has two main entries. One in Sacramento street, and the other in Rollo street, in the Madrid de Los Austrias. In the 18th Century this vegetable garden belonged to the Cistercian Nuns’ Congregation, specifically to the Sacramento Convent.

Today you will not find any remainders of the original Convent, but this little garden still resists the passing of time.

Príncipe de Anglona’s Palace gardens

These gardens are also located in the Madrid de Los Austrias area, in Plaza de la Paja. This garden was designed in the 18th Century and has a surface of over 500 squared metres. In a neoclassical style and with a Hispanic and Arabic inspiration, this is the ideal place to relax reading a good book in a sunny summer morning.

Jardines de Sabatini

These gardens with a classical style are situated in front of the northern façade of the Royal Palace. Designed and planned in the 30’s of the 20th Century, during the Second Spanish Republic. The fountains, sculptures and trees make this green zone one of the most special places of the capital of Spain.
